Fly back to the Home page   Gigs For 2017

"...The harp, for Sarah is indeed a harpist, is the original rock instrument. King David of Biblical fame was a harpist of some renown and indeed, harpists have held a high place in the cultures of many societies throughout the millennia.  Coupling that with one of the purest voices I have heard in many a day and you have a truly heady mix of musical delight...I dont think I have ever heard the combination of harp and vocals together in such a truly remarkable melding." Alan Hewitt, The Waiting Room

A Black Swan debut for this South Yorkshire celebrity.  Ray is a critically respected songwriter, poet and singer who has won comparison with Richard Thompson's writing and Dick Gaughan's voice. His songs have been covered by such as Roy Bailey, Kate Rusby and John Wright, but there's nothing quite like his own passionate performances

Saturday 27th July 2013 - J.J's Bar, Howden

8.30pm - Free Entry - A night of glorious music!

Featuring Foss, Susie Fox, David Strych

Delighted to be joining the brilliant group Foss, lovely singer Susie Fox and the unique talents of David Strych.  Foss are a four piece whose song choice is awesome quite frankly, I mean what band plays Jethro Tull's Bourree and Justin Hayward's Autumn Leaves from War of the Worlds and do fine justice to both?  That's just to name two songs?  Their bass player is David Strych and David in his solo capacity also has a superbly eclectic mix of songs; his Wuthering Heights on Harmonium is to be seen to be believed!  Brilliant!  Susie Fox plays quitar and sings, and sings beautifully, each song is delivered with such lovliness.  It's going to be a great night!  I can't wait!

Tel: 01439 772737

Throughout the year there are regular exhibitions of artist who are all inspired by the local beauty and majesty of the moors landscape.

It's become a regular event now for me to sit in the gorgeous surroundings of the Art Gallery here at Danby.  I sit and play my harp and sing my songs, then every now and again I have a chat to visitors and artists.  It's really not work is it?!  I'm always inspired by all the lovely artists I meet and love to gaze at their paintings and sculptures.  The Exhibition Openings are always a pleasure to attend and I can highly recommend a visit!

By the way The Once are fantastic - if you just go and check out their website they have other gigs coming up which you should try and get to if possible.   Beautiful harmonies and blending of voices, stories abound and just a gorgeous combination of instruments and vocals.  All the way from Newfoundland, Canada they are on tour over for a while.

I took part in the Selby Little Fest back in September 2013 and it was a joyous weekend quite frankly!  The remit for the Little Fest is to play in various different venues and take the music to the people.  Lots of different genres of music were present and I think that the organiser Ellen Cole will have no problem in generating interest for this fine venture.  Raising money for the wonderful St. Leonard's Hospice is a great thing to be part of and I'm delighted to offer my services and my p.a. equipment to the cause.  I'll be soundwoman for the day and no doubt listen and be entertained by some brilliant music!

Well done to all the organising team involved in this and of course the many volunteers who give up their time.  Keeping music LIVE and open to the masses is a wonderful thing!

I'll let you know the line up as I have more information.   The Black Swan do great ales but also great food so why not come and make a day of it!

Tuesday 22nd April 2014 - The Victoria Vaults, York

The Victoria Vaults, 47-49 Nunnery Lane, York, YO23 1AB

To The Blue plus Guests Sarah Dean & Paula Ryan

8.30pm ~ Free Entry

I'm delighted to have been asked once again, to share an evening of merry music making once again with my good friends Jane Stockdale & Chris Bartram of To The Blue in their established residency here at the Victoria Vaults pub.  The nights we've had so far have been amazing - our last night in March was a great success.

Jane and Chris have been working together creating some beautifully crafted songs, sung and played with great sensitivity.  Harmony vocals work perfectly with their two voices, subtle guitar work, whistle and percussion.  All comes together to make for a really special combination.   Self-penned songs and new takes on old traditional and contemporary songs meld together to create a superb collection of work.  We've been known to tinker around with each others songs too, it's really lovely as a solo artist to work with other musicians and explore other peoples ideas on established songs!  So!  Come and enjoy what will be a full evening of fabulous music.

Also joining us on the bill is my very good friend Paula Ryan, the Gaelic Funkstress!  Gorgeous songs played on guitar and the Marimba.  I think there's a good chance that we'll all be doing some songs together too, so I'm really looking forward to the night!

Friday 2nd May 2014 - St. Leonard's Hospice, York

I recently took part in a fundraising day called Folk Ahoy!  Ellen Cole organised the day and we made around £350 for the hospice via ticket sales and donations.  It was a fabulous celebration of local musical talent ~ everyone giving their time for a great cause.  As a follow on from this event I have been asked to visit the hospice and play for the patients.    I'll be doing a concert and then visiting patients on a one to one basis.  The work that the hospice does is incredible and humbling and I'm glad to be able to share my music for a while.

Saturday 3rd May 2014 - Filey Folk Festival

The Station Pub, 'Top House', 15 Church Street, Filey, YO14 9ED, North Yorkshire

2.10 pm - 2.40pm

It seems mad that I haven't been to this folk festival before - it's only a 45 minute drive from our house to the lovely seaside town of Filey.  It's a place I have many fond memories of - the first holiday I ever had without my parents was in Filey,  with 5 of my school chums celebrating after we'd done our 'O' levels!   And also hundreds of walks taken on the beach and Filey Brigg with my dog Charlie, happy dog and happy days indeed!

There's loads of great music in store for this weekend and I very much look forward to spending the day here.  Check out the website for all the wonderful things they're doing in the many different venues.   Thanks to Ian Kennington for organising all the performers at the Station Pub, can't wait!

Saturday 10th May 2014 - 'Somewhere Else'

An Evening of Music & Poetry with Sarah Dean & Don Walls

The Black Swan Inn, Peasholme Green, York, YO1 7PR

8pm Start - Donations of £3 (or more!) welcome - raising funds for St. Leonards' Hospice, York

Myself and Don Walls have collaborated a couple of times with evenings of shared song and poetry ~ we find that we enjoy one anothers work immensely and that we compliment each other well.  We tend to 'song and poem swap', Don will read some poems and I will sing a couple of songs.  I try and relate my theme to his writing and this way, we create a really fluid feel to the evening, passing back and forth themes through the two different mediums.

This being Spring time we thought we'd bring in some bird themes and maybe a few more surprises!  This will be the first of a series of evenings; we're currently planning a Summer and Autumn concert.

All money raised from this evening will go to support the wonderful work of St. Leonards' Hospice.

November Tour with Luna Rossa (November 2014)

New Album "Secrets & Lies" Mini-Tour

Beyond excited to be recording and on tour with my friend Anne-Marie Helder.  Anne-Marie and Jonathan Edwards of Panic Room got together to record their first album as a duo last  year.   Luna Rossa's first album 'Sleeping Pills & Lullabies' is quite frankly sublime and has had superb reviews.  Anne-Marie has a voice I have long admired and the combination of Jonathans stunning piano arrangements combined with a string quartet, bass, guitar, autoharp, celtic harp and celeste all meld together into something quite beautiful.  Despite being incredibly busy with the increasingly successful Panic Room they are recording again!  They have asked me to provide a bit of harp for their second album and play live with them.  What a lovely project to be part of!

For the tour there will be Anne-Marie on vocals and acoustic guitar, Jon on piano, Andy 'Wal' Coughlin on upright bass and myself on harp and backing vocals.

Monday 9th March 2015 - 'EXIT' Theatre Production

York International Women's Week

Theatre Studio 3, York St. John University, Lord Mayor's Walk, York YO31 7EX

7.30pm - This is the first of three dates for this production, also on Tuesday 10th March and Saturday 14th March

Charles Hutchinson from The Press did a wonderful write up on this exciting new production from The Real People Theatre Company...I'm really looking forward to working with Sue and Ann on this production and to meeting the other contributors."

Well, the Christmas season has come and gone with its full share of emotions, highs and lows, as usual. Who knows what the rest of the year holds for us, our families and friends?” says director Sue Lister. “The one thing we can be certain of in life is that death, sometime, somewhere, is part of it. The challenge is coming to terms with this. That’s why we’re about to explore the whole issue at the York International Women’s Week in March.”

Death comes in so many ways, suggests Sue. “It may come suddenly out of the blue or you may see it coming for years; it can be harrowing or peaceful, a shock or a relief,” she says. “How do we live with it while it’s happening to someone else? How do we survive the death of someone close to us? How do we face our own mortality? Death is an emotional roller coaster; how do we deal with it?”

Sue says our society tends to sweep death under the carpet, trying to avoid it at all costs. “In other cultures death is recognised as part of life and accepted as par for the course. What can we learn from these different attitudes? Tuesday 10th March 2015 - 'EXIT' Theatre Production

York International Women's Week

Theatre Studio 3, York St. John University, Lord Mayor's Walk, York YO31 7EX

7.30pm - This is the second of three dates for this production - also shown on Saturday 14th March.

Charles Hutchinson from The Press did a wonderful write up on this exciting new production from The Real People Theatre Company...I'm really looking forward to working with Sue and Ann on this production and to meeting the other contributors.

"Well, the Christmas season has come and gone with its full share of emotions, highs and lows, as usual.

Can talking about it make it easier to live with?,” she asks. “The Real People Theatre intend to grasp the nettle in our 16th production for York International Women’s Week, and we hope to take the show to the second Before I Die festival in May too.

Tuesday 24th March 2015 - Eddie Affleck & Sarah Dean Supporting The Poozies

The National Centre of Early Music, Walmgate, York

7.30pm  £16 / £14 Concs.

Over the last three years myself and Eddie have joined forces for a duo - it's always a joy working with Eddie; that lilting and melodious highlands accent and the interesting patterns he creates on the guitar melding together beautifully.  His broad range of traditional Scottish songs and of late self-penned numbers work really well with some harmonies and harp from me.  We are getting together to support The Poozies, who I have admired for many years!  We have to admit that Soundsphere were tremendously inspired by this group and so I am absolutely thrilled to be seeing them!

"...This all-female band has long delighted audiences with their unique brand of folk-based music. First formed in 1990, The Poozies were pioneers from the word go, creating unusual and exciting genre-crossing arrangements. Some 25 years later, founding members Sally Barker – who was a popular finalist on BBC1’s The Voice last year, but turned down a major record deal to continue working with her fellow Poozies – and Mary Macmaster remain, joined by Eilidh Shaw and Mairearad Green. With rhythmic, punching acoustic guitar, growling electro-harp, faultless fiddle, dexterous accordion and spine-tingling four-part vocal harmony, their material spans original songs, traditional Scottish and Gaelic pieces and contemporary folk and pop..."

I am delighted to be working with the Howsham Mill trustees to help them create a wonderful celebration day of festivities for this extraordinary building.  It's in the village just down the road where I live and it's on my dog walking route.  I have followed the journey the old mill has taken over the years, watching it bit by bit being fully restored and working!  The Heritage Open Day is part of a nationwide celebration of all Heritage venues and the trustees have had a great idea to have a feast of wonderful music by some great singer songwriters and musicians.  Artists and crafters will be getting involved and there are going to be activities for children too, so bring the whole family - take a tour around the mill and learn about the history of the mill and how it works.  I'll be playing on the day as well as co-ordinating all the musicians and doing the sound engineering...I love doing this sort of thing and it's great to bring so many wonderful musicians together to play in such a lovely setting.

Howsham Mill, Howsham, North Yorkshire, YO60 7PB

I am delighted to be working with the Howsham Mill trustees to help them create a wonderful celebration day of festivities for this extraordinary building.  It's in the village just down the road where I live and it's on my dog walking route.  I have followed the journey the old mill has taken over the years, watching it bit by bit being fully restored and working!  The Heritage Open Day is part of a nationwide celebration of all Heritage venues and the trustees have had a great idea to have a feast of wonderful music by some great singer songwriters and musicians.  Artists and crafters will be getting involved and there are going to be activities for children too, so bring the whole family - learn a little about this historic site and have fun!  I'll be playing on the day as well as co-ordinating all the musicians and doing the sound engineering...I love doing this sort of thing and it's great to bring so many wonderful musicians together to play in such a lovely setting.

Thursday 17th September 2015 - Supporting To The Blue

The Victoria Vaults, 47-49 Nunnery Lane, York, YO23 1AB

8.30pm ~ Free Entry

I'm delighted to have been asked to support two of my very dear friends, Jane Stockdale and Chris Bartram aka To The Blue in their gig here at the Victoria Vaults pub.

Over the last year or so we've been doing the odd trio performance together too and that is always fun to do, always really nice to work with Jane and Chris.

Thursday 29th October 2015 - The Black Swan Folk Club, York

Supporting The Carrivick Sisters

The Black Swan Folk Club, The Black Swan Inn, Peasholme Green, York, YO1 7PR

"...The Carrivick Sisters are one of the UK's top young bluegrass and folk acts. Twins Laura and Charlotte perform their original songs and instrumentals along with a few carefully chosen covers on guitar, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, and clawhammer banjo. Their busy touring schedule is rapidly building them a reputation for engaging and entertaining live performances with tight sibling vocal harmonies and multi-instrumental virtuosity. Having grown up in South Devon, an area rich in folk lore and legends, much of their original material is inspired by their local surroundings and history.

As well as touring all over the UK, the Carrivick Sisters have performed at major festivals in Canada and mainland Europe. They have released four CDs ("My Own Two Feet" - 2006, "Better Than 6 Cakes" - 2007, "Jupiter's Corner" - 2009, and "From the Fields" - 2011) to much critical acclaim, with "From the Fields" having been played on national radio. Their fifth, "Over the Edge" was released in October 2013..."

Really happy to be doing a couple of songs as support for this evening.  Another quality act presented by The Black Swan Folk Club - well done to organiser Roland Walls for all the hard work he does!

November Tour with Luna Rossa (November 2014)

This will be my second tour with Luna Rossa - happy days!

I can't believe that the year since we last toured together has flown by so quickly, without wishing the days away though I am really exited to be joining Anne-Marie Helder and Jonathan Edwards, our tour last year was really fabulous.  Working on their incredible music was a joy, recording being a small part of the beautiful Secrets & Lies album, which as Luna Rossa's second album received rave reviews from the media.    Anne-Marie and Jonathan Edwards of Panic Room got together to record their first album as a duo in 2013.   Luna Rossa's first album 'Sleeping Pills & Lullabies' is quite frankly sublime and has had superb reviews.  Anne-Marie has a voice I have long admired and the combination of Jonathans stunning piano arrangements combined with a string quartet, double bass, guitar, autoharp, celtic harp and celeste all meld together into something quite beautiful.  Despite being incredibly busy with their increasingly successful band Panic Room they still find time to pursue new material as the acoustic duo.  Such creativity is infectious to be around!

For the tour there will be Anne-Marie on vocals, acoustic guitar and flute, Jon on piano, Andy 'Wal' Coughlin on electric and double bass, (not to mention the endless stream of jokes) and myself on harp, backing vocals, percussion and whistling.

'The Illusion's Reckoning' Album Launch

The Lion Inn, Blakey Ridge, North York Moors

So many of my dear friends are musicians and it's always really lovely to be asked to take part in their musical journeys.

Heather Findlay is an incredibly talented singer songwriter with the most beautiful voice ever!  So very inspirational to watch someone develope and grow over the years.  Heather collaborated with Miami based Dave Kerzner to produce an exquisite body of work.  I shall be doing a few backing vocals here and there and a tiny bit of alto recorder.

It's going to be a wonderful night and The Lion Inn at Blakey is a particularly resonant and intimate venue for this most special of concerts.

"...After almost 2 years in the making, Monday January 25th 2016 will see the release of The Illusion's Reckoning from transatlantic project band, Mantra Vega co-founded by Heather Findlay and Dave Kerzner  (Sound of Contact).

"The Illusion's Reckoning album features lead vocals from Heather Findlay; keyboards and vocals from Dave Kerzner whilst at the band's core is rhythm section Alex Cromarty on drums and bassist Stu Fletcher along with lead, rhythm and acoustic guitarists Chris Johnson (Halo Blind) and Dave Kilminster.

Joining the project for special guest appearances are Nightwish's Troy Donockley on vocals and lead guitar; Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon) lead guitar; Irene Jansen (Star One/Ayreon) on vocals; Angela Gordon (Mostly Autumn/Odin Dragonfly) on recorders and vocals and Dutch woodwind player, Remko de Landmeter on Bansuri..."

"The Illusion's Reckoning is a concept album which flows more like a film score than a more typically linear piece. The album's journey is painted with far reaching audio moodscapes, which in their diversity, purposely echo thoughtful lyrical themes. The album is delivered in a predominantly progressive rock package, but at times takes on a hard rock, contemporary, retro, and even acoustic, folksy twist…"

Heather Findlay has long been an inspiration for me!  A sublime songwriter and singer, her talent is showcased in this tour; songs from the debut Mantra Vega album The Illusions Reckoning made with Miami based Dave Kerzner are intertwined with some precious favourites from this talented musicians repertoire.  Back in 2007 with fellow singer songwriter Angela Gordon together as the duo Odin Dragonfly, they gave me my first solo outing, supporting them for their album launch Offerings.  Since then, we've all been on some amazing musical journeys and it's a joy to be able to join Heather and her stella lineup for a tour around Britain!  This is going to be such fun and I can't wait!

This show at the famous De Boerderij will be the first of 8 shows.  I am so thrilled to be able to go to this venue, I've heard so much about it from friends who have played there.  I love going on tour with friends, making music and special memories.

The Victoria Vaults, 47-49 Nunnery Lane, York, YO23 1AB

To The Blue & Chechelele & ID

Music from 8.30pm ~ Free Entry

I'm delighted to have been asked to share an evening of merry music making once again with good friends Jane Stockdale and Chris Bartram aka To The Blue in their well established residency here at the Victoria Vaults pub.

We've been working together quite a bit of late and the combination works really well, so we will definitely be sharing some of those songs with you!

Come and enjoy what will be a full evening of fabulous music, Ian & Davina known as ID sing and play beautifully and are always a joy to hear, then we have the wonderfully vibrant world music of Chechelele.  Yorks amazing world music choir.  They are lovely to watch and will get your feet stomping with their rousing exuberant sound.

Sunday 1st May 2016 - Filey Folk Festival

The Imperial Music Bar, 22 Hope Street, Filey, YO14 9DL, North Yorkshire

7pm -> 7.45pm

It only a 45 minute drive from our house to the lovely seaside town of Filey.

Thanks to Dave Elf and Megan Elf who are going to be organising and providing great sound and light!  Actually Dave is performing after me so I'm glad to be his support!

The harp is the perfect instrument to provide beautiful background music for an event or party.  It creates an atmosphere that is unique and magical; beautiful soundscapes fill the air which neither distract or hinder conversation.

...a new band, a new collaboration...

for Sarah Dean, Jane Stockdale and Chris Bartram!

with special guests Lunabaï and ID

8.30pm ~ Free Entry

This is just a little bit exciting as I am delighted to announce that myself, Jane Stockdale and Chris Bartran are joining forces to create a trio - as yet without a name!  We are putting together our harmony vocals, guitars, harp, appalacian dulcimer, trumpet, percussion and schruti box to create magical mystical soundscapes!  We all share the love of the outdoors and nature and history as inspiration for our songwriting.  We also have a shared background of music that we are influenced by and this is definitely going to be coming into play when we write.  Think folky, proggy, slightly poppy at times, we have been working together collaborating on each others songs for certain concerts for just over two years now and we realised the melding was perfect!  So happy days ahead!

Joining us this evening we're delighted to have Lunabaï.  A gorgeous duo comprising two very talented musicians Natacha Dauphin and Lucy Castro.  Beautiful harmonies and some unusual musical accompaniments!  A real treat!

Our lovely friends Davina and Ian (known as ID) are also joining us.  It is a lovely thing to see someone sing as beautifully as Davina does.  Together with Ians subtle quitar work they sing covers of some real classics and put their own unique twist to them.  Always great to listen to them.

Friday 24th -> Sunday 26th June 2016 - Holy Island Festival 2016, Northumberland

THE UNTHANKS, THE LINDISFARNE STORY BAND &.........TO THE BLUE (+1)!

It's the second year for this festival and Jane & Chris as To The Blue played last year and went down a storm!  This festival promises to be brilliant with headliners of the calibre of The Unthanks we're really excited!  Quite frankly what a setting!  The access to Holy Island is by a causeway and only accessible at certain times of day, what with the water and all that....so our audience is held captive!  There is no escape!!  They have just finished building a brand new performance space, still called The Village Hall it is a fully equiped stage and seating for 200 people.  A beautifully designed hall with performance and exhibition space, it's a real benefit to this unique island, both for island dwellers and visitors.

We're on stage at 2.30pm in The Village Hall

We're so looking forward to our trip up to Northumberland, it's a beautiful island and the Northumbrian coastline is amazing, it promises to be such a lovely weekend.  Check out the website for details of other acts confirmed.

I can't really explain to you how much this support means to me - to play for a band that had such an important part to play in my musical development and tastes.  If I had thought all those years ago when I first picked up Midnight Mushrumps and wondered at the musicality of it all.  The sound intrigued me, they intrigued me and if I never did another concert after this one I would be complete.  I sing The Ploughboy's Dream with the Schruti Box and always think of Gryphon when I do so.  To be able to meet these guys is a bit beyond awesome for me!
